Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Nashville?
On a private residential lot, usually not, unless the tree is in a protected zone, a historic overlay, or the lot is subject to a tree-preservation condition from when it was developed. Commercial property and some newer subdivisions are different. We check before we cut, because a tree removed without a required permit is a fine and a replanting order.
How is a tree removed when there is no room to fell it?
In pieces, from the top down. A climber or a bucket truck takes the canopy off limb by limb, each piece rigged on ropes and lowered rather than dropped, until the trunk is short enough to fell or is cut into rounds. It is slower than felling and it is how a tree between a house and a fence comes down without touching either.
