Is my tree dying, and can it be saved?
Dead branches at the top, bark falling off, fungus at the base, a lean that is new, and leaves that are small or off-color are the signs to look at. Some of it is treatable — a nutrient deficiency, a pest, compacted soil over the roots. Root rot, a hollow trunk or a major structural crack usually is not. An assessment says which, and whether the tree is safe to keep while it is treated.
What is tree cabling and when is it needed?
Steel cables installed high in the crown to support a weak fork or a heavy limb so it does not split away in a storm. It is used on trees worth keeping — a mature oak over the house, a tree with a codominant stem — where removing the weak part would ruin the tree. Cables are inspected every few years and they are a support, not a guarantee.
