Trimming & Pruning, in practice
Where a cut is made matters as much as which limb is cut. A cut at the branch collar lets the tree seal over it; a flush cut or a stub does not, and it becomes an entry point for decay that shows up as a hazard years later.
We do not top trees. Cutting a crown back to stubs produces a flush of weakly attached regrowth, and within a few years the tree is more dangerous than it was, not less. If somebody has quoted you for topping, that is worth knowing.
